How to install an eSIM on Android (step by step)

Installing an eSIM on an Android device like a Samsung Galaxy or Google Pixel is quick and easy. It's best to do it at home over Wi-Fi, before you leave on your trip. The steps differ slightly per brand, but the basics are the same everywhere. In this guide we'll walk you through it, including the settings and how to fix common problems.

Tip: the menu names vary per brand, but it always comes down to SIM management, then adding an eSIM and scanning the QR code.

Before you start

• Your device supports eSIM. This applies to most Samsung Galaxy models from the S20 onwards, Google Pixel from the 3 onwards, and many recent devices from other brands. Not sure? Open the phone app and dial \*#06#, then check whether an EID appears, which means your device supports eSIM.
• Your device is SIM-unlocked.
• You're connected to Wi-Fi.
• Your QR code is at hand (you receive it right after purchase, on screen and by email).

Step by step (Samsung Galaxy)

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Connections and then SIM manager.
3. Choose Add eSIM.
4. Tap Scan QR code.
5. Scan the code you received from us and follow the steps.

Step by step (Google Pixel)

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Network & internet.
3. Under SIMs, tap the plus sign or Add SIM.
4. Choose Download a SIM instead and scan the QR code.

Other Android brands

On other brands (such as Oppo, Xiaomi or Motorola) you'll usually find the option under Settings > Mobile network or SIM cards, with a button to add an eSIM or "plan" via a QR code. The order differs, but you're always looking for "Add eSIM" or "Download SIM".

Choosing the right settings

• Calls and texts: your own SIM card, so you keep your number.
• Mobile data: your new eSIM (only switch this on at your destination).
• Data roaming for the eSIM: turn this on. That's normal and costs nothing extra: you've already paid for your bundle, and the eSIM needs roaming to work on the local network.
• Data roaming for your own SIM card: turn this off, so it doesn't use expensive data outside the EU.

When does your bundle start running?

Installing doesn't start your bundle yet. Most data bundles only start running once your eSIM connects to a local network for the first time on location. So only switch your eSIM on as your data source when you arrive.

Troubleshooting

• QR code won't scan: make sure there's good light, or enter the details from your email manually.
• No internet on arrival: check that the eSIM is set as the data source and that data roaming for the eSIM is turned on. Restart your device if needed.

If you can't find the menu right away, search for the word eSIM in the search bar at the top of your settings.
