How to install an eSIM on iPhone (step by step)

Installing an eSIM on your iPhone is easy and takes only a few minutes. The most convenient approach is to do it at home, while you still have Wi-Fi, before you leave on your trip. In this guide we'll walk you step by step through the installation and the right settings, and we'll fix the most common problems.

Tip: install your eSIM at home over Wi-Fi, but only switch the bundle on when you arrive. That way you don't lose any days of your allowance.

Before you start

First, check these points:

  • Your device supports eSIM. This applies to the iPhone XS, XR and all newer models. Not sure? Go to Settings > General > About and check whether you see an IMEI listed under "Digital SIM".
  • Your device is SIM-unlocked. A device locked to one operator won't work with an eSIM from a different provider.
  • You're connected to Wi-Fi. Always install over Wi-Fi, before you leave.
  • You have your QR code at hand. You receive it right after purchase, on screen and by email.

Step-by-step installation

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone.
  2. Tap Mobile network (or "Mobile data").
  3. Tap Add eSIM or Add plan.
  4. Choose Use QR code.
  5. Scan the QR code you received from us. If scanning doesn't work, choose "Enter manually" and fill in the details from your email.
  6. Follow the on-screen steps to add the eSIM. You can give the eSIM a name, for example "Travel".

Choosing the right settings

After adding it, your iPhone asks how you want to use the two SIM cards. Set it up like this:

  • Default line / calls: your own SIM card, so you keep your number for calls and texts.
  • Mobile data: your new eSIM (only switch this on at your destination).
  • Data roaming for the eSIM: turn this on. That sounds contradictory, but it's normal and costs nothing extra: you've already paid for your bundle, and the eSIM needs data roaming to work on the local network.
  • Data roaming for your own SIM card: turn this off, so it doesn't use expensive data outside the EU.

When does your bundle start running?

Important: installing doesn't start your bundle yet. Most data bundles only start running once your eSIM connects to a local network for the first time on location. So only switch your eSIM on as your data source when you're at your destination. That way you get the most out of your validity period.

Fixing common problems

  • QR code won't scan: make sure there's good light, or use the "Enter manually" option with the details from your email.
  • No internet on arrival: check that the eSIM is set as the mobile data source and that data roaming for the eSIM is turned on. Restart your device if needed.
  • "Can't activate eSIM": you may not have had Wi-Fi, or the QR code had already been used once. Get in touch with us and we'll help you further.

If one of these settings is wrong, you'll often get no connection even though the eSIM is installed correctly.
