Coverage and networks

Sri Lanka has four mobile operators: Dialog (Dialog Axiata), SLT-Mobitel, Hutch and Airtel. Dialog is the market leader with more than half the market and extensive 4G and 5G coverage, especially around Colombo. SLT-Mobitel is the second player with strong 4G coverage, including in the countryside, and a population coverage of around 91 percent. Networks: Dialog, SLT-Mobitel, Hutch.

For navigation, sharing photos and some streaming during a round trip, 5 to 10 GB is more than enough. For longer trips, it is better to choose unlimited.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Our eSIM gives you instant mobile data in Sri Lanka on the local networks, with no roaming fees. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

How much data do I need for Sri Lanka?

It depends on your trip. For mostly maps and messaging, 1 to 3 GB is plenty. If you use navigation, social media and some streaming, plan for roughly 1 GB every two to three days.

How fast do I get my eSIM?

Right after payment. You receive a QR code on screen and by email immediately. It is best to install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Do I keep my own phone number?

Yes. Your own SIM stays in your phone for calls and texts. The eSIM runs alongside it, purely for mobile data in Sri Lanka.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Sri Lanka?

The cheapest eSIM for Sri Lanka at esimzu starts from €2,49, with a lowest-price guarantee. You pay in euros by Bancontact, card or crypto and receive the eSIM instantly by QR code, with no app or physical SIM card.

Which provider has the best coverage in Sri Lanka?

Dialog is the largest and has the best coverage in and around cities such as Colombo, with 4G and 5G. SLT-Mobitel scores strongly in the countryside. Our eSIM uses these local networks, so you stay connected during train rides through the interior too.

Does the network also work in the hills and tea fields?

In densely populated areas and along the main routes, coverage is good. In remote hill areas and tea fields around Nuwara Eliya or Ella the signal can be weaker. An eSIM that switches to the strongest network gives the best chance of a connection there.
