Coverage and networks

The Faroe Islands have two mobile operators: Føroya Tele (known internationally as Faroese Telecom) and Nema. Our travel eSIM runs on the Faroese Telecom network, the islands' incumbent operator, with 4G and 5G where available. The archipelago has 18 islands, linked by bridges, subsea tunnels and ferries. Coverage is generally good in Tórshavn, Klaksvík and the villages along the main roads, so you can rely on navigation on your way to places such as Gásadalur, Saksun or Tjørnuvík. On remote hiking trails, in deep valleys and at sea between the islands the signal can be weaker or drop out for a while. Networks: Faroese Telecom.

For a week with a rental car, navigation and plenty of photos of cliffs and waterfalls, 3 to 5 GB is usually enough. For a short stay of a few days, or if you mostly use wifi, 1 GB will do.

The Faroe Islands are part of the Kingdom of Denmark but not of the EU or the EEA. EU roaming rules therefore do not apply, so check your home plan before you go or choose an eSIM with a fixed bundle.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Faroe Islands?

Yes. Our eSIM gives you instant mobile data in Faroe Islands on the local networks, with no roaming fees. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

How much data do I need for Faroe Islands?

It depends on your trip. For mostly maps and messaging, 1 to 3 GB is plenty. If you use navigation, social media and some streaming, plan for roughly 1 GB every two to three days.

How fast do I get my eSIM?

Right after payment. You receive a QR code on screen and by email immediately. It is best to install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Do I keep my own phone number?

Yes. Your own SIM stays in your phone for calls and texts. The eSIM runs alongside it, purely for mobile data in Faroe Islands.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Faroe Islands?

The cheapest eSIM for Faroe Islands at esimzu starts from €2,49, with a lowest-price guarantee. You pay in euros by Bancontact, card or crypto and receive the eSIM instantly by QR code, with no app or physical SIM card.

Does EU roaming apply in the Faroe Islands?

Not automatically. The Faroe Islands are a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark, but they are not in the EU or the EEA, so the EU roaming rules do not apply there. Whether your home plan still includes the islands in its European allowance differs from provider to provider. With an eSIM you know in advance how much data you have and what it costs.

Will I have signal everywhere on the islands?

In the towns, the villages and along the main roads, signal is generally good. On hiking trails in remote valleys, below steep cliffs or on the ferry between two islands, the signal can be weaker or drop out for a while. Download an offline map of the islands before you set out.

How much data do I need for a week in the Faroe Islands?

For a week of driving around with navigation, messaging and photo sharing, 3 to 5 GB is comfortable. If you plan to upload or stream a lot of video, take 10 GB. For a short trip of a few days, 1 GB is enough, and that plan runs for 7 days.

Does the eSIM work as soon as I land at Vágar?

Yes. You install the eSIM at home before you travel. When you land at Vágar Airport it connects automatically to the Faroese Telecom network, so there is no need to look for a SIM card locally.
