Coverage and networks

Laos has three operators: Unitel (the largest, with the broadest coverage), Lao Telecom and the smaller ETL. In Vientiane, Luang Prabang and Vang Vieng there is fine 4G, but in the mountainous northern provinces and remote villages the signal quickly weakens or drops out. Unitel reaches furthest along the main roads and in smaller towns. Networks: Unitel, Lao Telecom, ETL.

Choose an eSIM that runs on Unitel for the best coverage outside the cities. For a round trip, 8 to 15 GB is usually enough.

Laos lies outside the EU, so ordinary roaming with your home plan is expensive here.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Laos?

Yes. Our eSIM gives you instant mobile data in Laos on the local networks, with no roaming fees. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

How much data do I need for Laos?

It depends on your trip. For mostly maps and messaging, 1 to 3 GB is plenty. If you use navigation, social media and some streaming, plan for roughly 1 GB every two to three days.

How fast do I get my eSIM?

Right after payment. You receive a QR code on screen and by email immediately. It is best to install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Do I keep my own phone number?

Yes. Your own SIM stays in your phone for calls and texts. The eSIM runs alongside it, purely for mobile data in Laos.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Laos?

The cheapest eSIM for Laos at esimzu starts from €2,49, with a lowest-price guarantee. You pay in euros by Bancontact, card or crypto and receive the eSIM instantly by QR code, with no app or physical SIM card.

Do I have internet in the mountains around Luang Prabang?

In Luang Prabang itself the 4G is good, but as soon as you head into the mountains and remote villages, the signal becomes unreliable. Unitel has the broadest reach there. Download offline maps in advance for treks.

Which network has the best coverage in Laos?

Unitel is by far the largest operator and has the broadest 4G coverage, including along highways and in smaller towns. Lao Telecom covers most cities, but is less strong in remote rural areas.
