Coverage and networks

Uganda has two major mobile operators: MTN Uganda and Airtel Uganda. Our travel eSIM for Uganda runs on the Airtel Uganda network, with 4G in Kampala, Entebbe, Jinja, Mbarara and other towns, and 3G where 4G is not yet available. In rural areas and on remote roads speeds can be lower. In national parks such as Queen Elizabeth, Murchison Falls and Bwindi coverage varies: around lodges, park gates and villages there is often a signal, but in remote parts of a park it can drop out. Networks: Airtel Uganda.

For a trip of one to two weeks with a safari and gorilla trekking, 5 GB is usually enough. If you share a lot of photos and videos or use your phone as a hotspot, take 10 GB and download offline maps of the parks in advance.

Uganda is outside the EU, so EU roam-like-at-home does not apply and roaming on your home plan is usually expensive. You install the eSIM before you leave and are online as soon as you arrive in Uganda, without first having to register a local SIM with your passport.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Uganda?

Yes. Our eSIM gives you instant mobile data in Uganda on the local networks, with no roaming fees. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

How much data do I need for Uganda?

It depends on your trip. For mostly maps and messaging, 1 to 3 GB is plenty. If you use navigation, social media and some streaming, plan for roughly 1 GB every two to three days.

How fast do I get my eSIM?

Right after payment. You receive a QR code on screen and by email immediately. It is best to install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Do I keep my own phone number?

Yes. Your own SIM stays in your phone for calls and texts. The eSIM runs alongside it, purely for mobile data in Uganda.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Uganda?

The cheapest eSIM for Uganda at esimzu starts from €6,49, with a lowest-price guarantee. You pay in euros by Bancontact, card or crypto and receive the eSIM instantly by QR code, with no app or physical SIM card.

Which network does the eSIM use in Uganda?

The eSIM uses the Airtel Uganda network, one of the country's two major operators. You get 4G where it is available and 3G where 4G is still missing. In cities and larger towns that is plenty for WhatsApp, navigation and social media.

Will I have a signal during gorilla trekking in Bwindi?

Around the lodges and villages on the edge of Bwindi and Mgahinga there is often a signal, but inside the dense rainforest itself it usually drops out. Do not count on internet during the trek and download maps and bookings in advance.

Why an eSIM instead of a local SIM card?

To get a local SIM card in Uganda you have to show your passport and visa and have the card registered at an operator outlet. With a travel eSIM you sort everything out in advance, install it at home and are connected the moment you arrive.

How much data do I need in Uganda?

For a short stay with mostly WhatsApp and email, 1 GB for 7 days can be enough, and 3 GB gives more room for navigation. For a two week trip with a safari, 5 GB is comfortable. If you share a lot of videos or work on the road, choose 10 or 20 GB.
