Coverage and networks

The three operators in Zambia are Airtel (market leader), MTN and the state-owned Zamtel. Airtel has the strongest 4G coverage in urban and rural areas and is expanding considerably with hundreds of new masts. MTN was the first to launch 5G in 2022, mainly in Lusaka. Coverage is good in cities and along main roads, but in remote rural regions and national parks reach remains limited. Networks: Airtel, MTN, Zamtel.

For cities and travel, 5 to 8 GB is enough; choose an eSIM that relies on Airtel or MTN and download offline maps for safari and park visits.

Zambia is outside the EU, so without a travel eSIM or local SIM card you often pay expensive roaming rates on your home plan.

Frequently asked questions

Does an eSIM work in Zambia?

Yes. Our eSIM gives you instant mobile data in Zambia on the local networks, with no roaming fees. Your phone needs to support eSIM and be carrier-unlocked.

How much data do I need for Zambia?

It depends on your trip. For mostly maps and messaging, 1 to 3 GB is plenty. If you use navigation, social media and some streaming, plan for roughly 1 GB every two to three days.

How fast do I get my eSIM?

Right after payment. You receive a QR code on screen and by email immediately. It is best to install it at home over Wi-Fi before you leave.

Do I keep my own phone number?

Yes. Your own SIM stays in your phone for calls and texts. The eSIM runs alongside it, purely for mobile data in Zambia.

What is the cheapest eSIM for Zambia?

The cheapest eSIM for Zambia at esimzu starts from €5,49, with a lowest-price guarantee. You pay in euros by Bancontact, card or crypto and receive the eSIM instantly by QR code, with no app or physical SIM card.

Is there mobile reception in the national parks such as South Luangwa?

Around the entrance gates and larger lodges there is often limited 4G from Airtel or MTN, but deep inside parks like South Luangwa or Kafue the signal largely disappears. Count on offline maps and lodge wifi.

Which operator has the best coverage in Zambia?

Airtel is the market leader with the broadest 4G coverage, including in peri-urban and rural zones, while MTN is strong in the cities and was the first to roll out 5G in Lusaka. A travel eSIM automatically selects the strongest network.
