These are mostly small island states and remote areas where data runs over satellite or a single expensive local network. If you travel there, download your maps and music over Wi-Fi first and pick a smaller plan.

What this data tells us

  • Bigger plans are far cheaper per GB. Our lowest prices per GB almost always come from the largest bundles. If you travel longer or use several apps, a bigger plan quickly pays off.
  • The median sits around €1.52 per GB. Half of all destinations are below that. If you pay much more, check whether a bigger plan or a regional eSIM is cheaper.
  • Price follows infrastructure and competition, not wealth. A country like Turkey is dirt cheap, while some wealthy island destinations are the most expensive.

How we calculate this

We use our own current catalogue prices in euros. For each country we take the plan with the lowest price per GB (usually the largest data bundle) and divide the price by the number of gigabytes. Prices are from 28 July 2026 and may change; esimzu offers a lowest-price guarantee. Check the live prices on each destination page.

Based on our catalogue, Turkey is the cheapest, with data from €0.40 per GB via the 50 GB plan for €19.99.

Why is data so expensive in some countries?
